Job Summary

Maintains systems including heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and associated equipment (ie, pumps, compressors, humidifiers, chillers, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, gas burners, furnaces, unit heaters, make-up air units, propane equipment, and exhaust fans, along with air / water flow and temperature controls, and building control systems) throughout the City's parks, sports fields, public pathways, community centres, libraries, heritage facilities, offices, municipal court house, works yards, and specific transit facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Supervisor, HVAC/Mechanical Services, the successful candidate will monitor, inspect, maintain and repair mechanical building systems including HVAC equipment, domestic hot and cold water systems, refrigeration systems, oil and gas fired equipment, compressed air systems, pneumatic and electronic temperature control systems, and other related equipment and systems. More specifically, daily tasks may be as follows:

  • Conduct preventative and demand (reactive) maintenance activities on various equipment and systems.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose issues and maintain equipment.
  • Replace equipment as required in a cost effective manner.
  • Inspect all new equipment for compliance and proper installation as may be conducted by others (Capital Improvements, Life Cycle Replacement, Emergency Capital etc)
  • Support and assist with design and installation reviews of Capital projects
  • Comply with relevant City policies.
  • Provide ad hoc assistance on projects/initiatives within the unit/team.
  • Use information that is stored within the unit/team and/or available without special authorization.
  • Purchase of material and equipment, as well as submission of monthly expenses
  • Functional guidance of apprentices, co-op students.
  • Promote and participate in a team-based, continuous improvement focused, customer service oriented environment by actively communicating with all staff and clients
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Secondary School education is required.
  • 5+ years of field experience working on boilers, MUA's, RTU's and light duty refrigeration systems.
  • Valid gas technician 1 Certificate accredited by the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA).
  • Valid Ozone Depletion Certificate. Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, Ontario Electrical Code, OH&S Regulations and other applicable codes.
  • Certificate of qualification (C of Q) as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Ontario 313a).
  • A valid G Driver's Licence and a clean driver's abstract is required
  • Able to troubleshoot low voltage controls, as well as being mindful of working on live power systems, only where absolutely required, with applicable PPE.
  • Physically capable of performing all work required of this position (occasional lifting of 25 kg up to shoulder height, frequent bending, squatting / kneeling, working inside and outside in all types of weather within environments that can be dusty and / or slippery, climbing ladders)
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both in written and verbal communications.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Must have outstanding customer service skills.
  • Able to demonstrate ability to understand / learn new technologies, work independently, as well as with others.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft office and computer tablets applications.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints
  • Additional qualifications in Building Automation and controls are preferred.
