Description

The Seasonal Warehouse Worker will be responsible for standard warehouse duties of receiving, sorting, put-away, picking and shipping of primarily holiday season toys as well as food products for a great cause. Regular non powered material handling equipment (pallet jacks, dollies, carts) use is required as well as a significant amount of manual work and use of computer systems to help supply donated goods to member agencies who help the needy in our communities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Warehouse:

  • Perform shipping and receiving of goods
  • Loading and offloading of trucks both by hand and using manual handling equipment(MHE)
  • Operate forklift (if licensed) to move and store goods in warehouse according to warehouse layout plan
  • Inspect goods received for quality / damage / expiry (use-by) dates; document, rotate, and store stock appropriately to ensure maximum yield is achieved
  • Build orders of toys as well as skids of fresh, frozen and / or dry goods for delivery
  • Assist driver with offsite pickups as well as deliveries of donated toys and other materials
  • Sort and categorize toys as well as food items
  • Accurately count and weigh product being delivered or shipped
  • Assist with inventory reconciliation as required
  • Record drop offs and pickups at Family Services
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance tasks of warehouse, yard, and equipment as required
  • Inspect manual material handling equipment to ensure it is safe for use
  • Order planning and order release tasks as required

General:

  • Promote the Mission, Policies and Objectives of The Salvation Army
  • Prepare, complete and submit documentation in a timely manner as required
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Adhere to the Salvation Army Policy & Procedures and Health & Safety Guidelines
  • Wear the appropriate safety / Personal Protective Equipment and maintain a clean uniform
  • Ensure all work is completed in a safe manner, in accordance with TSA, WSIB, CVOR, and all other regulatory requirements
  • Other related duties as assigned

Health & Safety

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling and pickup of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property, including donations and vehicles
  • Responsible to use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer
  • Report any safety issues immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property

Perform other related duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full time position
  • Most work is performed in a warehouse environment with exposure to handling garbage, monotony of work various odours
  • Work involves some exposure to outside weather elements for deliveries and pickups
  • Work involves regular work in freezers and refrigerators with some outdoor work in winter
  • May on occasion be required to lift/move/transport weights of more than 39lbs but regular weights would normally fall under 39lbs
  • This job requires frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching. Lifting and kneeling

Normal hours of work - hours and work schedule will vary as operational requirements and follows a work rotation schedule and will include days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of High School or GED

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • More than 1 year of experience
  • Acceptable criminal record check
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required

  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to adopt a flexible work schedule during peak and / or seasonal times
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Code of Ethics
  • Able to work in a consultative, diplomatic and tactful manner
  • Organizational / time-management skills to plan and manage the workload
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
